Do you like astronomy? You think you know something about it? Then you are invited to participate in the 1st Canadian Astronomical Olympiad!
Check the Problems:

1. “Great” oppositions of Mars occur every 15 to 17 years. To simplify the colonization of Mars and improve both environmental conditions and travel time, our civilization has conceived an ambitious project: reduce Mars’ semi-major axis by 6% while keeping the eccentricity of the orbit unchanged. How often would perihelic oppositions of Mars occur in this new orbit?

2. Determine, ignoring the effects of refraction, the sidereal time and azimuth at the rising and at the setting of the star ε Geminorum (α = 6h39m·7, δ = +25°12') at the latitude φ =55°45'.

3. Determine the semimajor axis, revolution period, eccentricity, and perihelion distance of a comet, which, at 1 AU from the sun, has a speed (v) directed perpendicular to its radius-vector. Assume that v is 10 times less than the radial speed of the Earth.

 4. How big can an asteroid get before it is impossible (for a human) to jump into space from it.  Make any reasonable assumptions.

5. A binary star has components of magnitude 2m  and 3m. Find the total magnitude of the system.  

 6. A radio source in the nucleus of an active galaxy has an angular dimension of 0.001" and a red shift z = 0.5. Estimate the linear dimensions of source in parsecs.

IOAA 2017


Welcome to the 11th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA2017) on November 12-21, 2017 in Phuket. 
Phuket is the most popular cities and a major tourist destination with a rich cultural heritage, artistic tradition and stunning scenery. 
As organizers of IOAA 2017, we are delighted to welcome all participants and visitors from all around the world. We trust you will have a memorable time here at this event.

Participation of Canada in
As you are aware, Thailand hosted the 11th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) in Phuket, Thailand during November 12-21, 2017. Her Royal Highness Princess of Thailand Maha Chakri Sirindhorn presented in the official opening ceremony.
In this IOAA, 210 participants from 45 different countries of the world came and spent 10 days together competing and interacting with each other.
This year marked our fifth year of hard work and endless efforts in preparing our team for this prestigious competition. As always, Russian-Canadian Educational and Recreational Centre of Toronto hosted theoretical and practical training of the participants of the Olympiad.
The Canadian team consisted of the winners of the International Physics and Astrophysics Olympiad, the Canadian Astronomical Olympiad and the CAP contest, as follows:
1.      Anna Khoroshilov
2.      Edward Tian
3.      Felix Yu
4.      Leon Kim               
5.      Matthew Zhang          
The team was accompanied by two leaders: Dr. Vera Zagainova and Konstantin Toubis.    
The 11th IOAA was very well organized. All participants were accommodated in excellent hotels. There were many excursions and interesting meetings.
All rounds (theoretical, observation, data analysis) and  team competition were well organized too.
Our Results:
- Anna Khoroshilov received 3rd place in the team competition.
- Anna Khoroshilov and Matthew Zhang  received an Honorable Mention.
